This leaves John feeling he has to become someone he isn't, in order to win the respect of his father. His father won't respect the choices he has made for himself. Kant can be enormously strengthening to John in his notion that he knows what he wants to do with his life and that his father cannot know better than he does. But he is also undermining of this very process of self-affirmation in the way he brings us up systematically to distrust our wants, desires, emotions and feelings. It becomes easy for John to feel he is only satisfying his 'animal nature' and that this kind of decision can have no 'moral worth', since John is simply following his inclinations.

She helps transcend the boundaries of liberal moral theory and questions the autonomy of morality in her recognition that human dignity is not something that can be assumed in our relations with others, but has to be continually affirmed and struggled for through a transformation of social relations of power and dependency. She helps us grasp the misleading and confusing terms in which liberal theory is often contrasted with socialist theory. Different questions come into focus as we begin to face some of the difficulties and promise of personal and political transformation.
